Babson WIN Lab alumna Jamie Steenbakkers just took home $30,000 in prizes by winning first place at the annual Draper competition for collegiate women.
The annual competition brings undergraduates from all over the country to demo their businesses and ultimately pitch for a shot at three prizes: $10,000, $7,500, and $5,000. In order to bring home the blue ribbon, female founders create table demos and talk one on one with multiple judges who score them based on various criteria. Ten of the participants are selected to go on to a 90 second pitch and 3 and a half minute Q&A session in front of an esteemed panel of judges, including Tim and Melissa Draper, famous for their role in making big investments in companies like Skype, Tesla, and Tumblr.
Of the ten pitches, three were crowned winners, with first place going to Babson undergrad, and WIN Lab alumna, Jamie Steenbakkers. The CEO of Busy Beauty has built a business creating showerless beauty products and was able to demonstrate incredible traction to date. Moments after the winners were announced, Tim and Melissa Draper revealed that this year's prizes would be doubled and the winner would receive $10,000 to attend their startup school in Silicon Valley: Draper University.
Busy Beauty's first place win makes her the second WIN Lab alumna, and Babson student team, to take home that prize. In 2016, Emily Levy and co-founder Maria del Mar Gomez, won first place with their company: Mighty Well.
